Shopify accepts images up to 20 MP / 20 MB and serves them through its CDN, which generates responsive variants for you. But the CDN can only work with what you give it — a clean 2048 px original at quality 85 produces better variants than a noisy 12 MB upload, and your theme editor stops crawling.

Why this is a conversion issue, not a tech chore

Product pages live and die on perceived speed: shoppers bounce from pages that take more than a few seconds, and image weight is the usual cause on mobile. Compressing a catalog's photos from ~5 MB to ~300 KB each takes a page from sluggish to instant on 4G — the kind of change that shows up in conversion rate, not just Lighthouse.

Batch the whole catalog: drop every product photo at once, download the ZIP, and bulk-upload to Shopify. Square-crop first for uniform grids.

How it works

Three steps. About five seconds.

1

Square-crop your product shots

2048 × 2048 keeps collection grids uniform and supports pinch-zoom detail.

2

Drop them here

Quality 85 holds up under zoom; the batch downloads as one ZIP, all processed locally.

3

Upload to Shopify

The CDN generates responsive sizes from your lean originals. Pages get faster storewide.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best image size for Shopify products?

2048 × 2048 square — uniform grids, sharp zoom, and well within Shopify’s 20 MP limit. Compress to quality ~85 so files stay a few hundred KB.

Does Shopify compress images automatically?

Shopify’s CDN creates responsive variants and can serve WebP, but it works from your upload. Clean, pre-compressed originals produce better variants and a faster admin.

Do faster images really increase sales?

Slow pages measurably increase bounce, especially on mobile where most store traffic lives. Cutting image weight is the single biggest speed lever on a typical product page.

JPG or WebP for Shopify uploads?

JPG at quality 85 is the safe default — Shopify’s CDN handles modern-format delivery to browsers. Use PNG/WebP for logos needing transparency.
